This week we are asked to “…share a photo that says Danger! to you”
Danger, of course, is often in the eye of the beholder and the time it is perceived…not to mention the context of our times.
Consider this scene from Petaluma’s American Alley…and look at it again AFTER reading the background information below the photo…
- The street signs have been there for quite some time.
- Then a mural depicting a farmworker was added two years ago. I assumed at the time that “Migra” was short for immigrant.
- A few days ago I looked up “Migra” and learned that it is: “A Spanish slang term used to refer to employees of the United States Government who are responsible for immigration enforcement and border patrols. Agencies such as United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Border Patrol are both referred to as La Migra.”
Combining the mural image, the meaning of Migra and the street signs, the scene now becomes a danger warning…AMERICAN ALLEY, ONE WAY SIGN POINTING SOUTH, IMMIGRATION AUTHORITIES DIRECTING THE WAY OUT…
